During the past nine years of its existence, Radio B92 has traveled a long
way. It was the very first radio station in this corner of the world to put
diverse styles of urban underground music on air. Back in 1989 it was the
distorted guitar noise of Mudhoney and My Bloody Valentine, hip-hop breaks
of A Tribe Called Quest and BDP and the sophisticated house grooves of Mr.
Fingers and Inner City -- today, the names and genres may have changed but
the idea is the same.
In the years that followed, besides regular broadcast, B92 has been
supporting Yugoslav alternative acts through numerous record releases as
well as creating a lively club scene by organizing hundreds of parties which
have presented both local and famous international DJs such as Slam, DJ
Hell, John Acquaviva, Phil Perry, Misjah, Trevor Rockcliffe and many more.
Despite the ever-imminent danger of being cut off the air and perpetual
economic and political crisis, Radio B92 has struggled on, constantly trying
to set new standards for a modern urban radio while remaining one of the
highest-ranking stations in Belgrade. This compilation is a glimpse of our
utopia. It is also an attempt to make the music more reachable in a scene
which, despite enthusiastic efforts from several small companies (HMK, Nikad
Robom), still copes with insufficient distribution of good club music.
It was practically impossible to include all the artists and labels we
respect although the response from everyone asked was surprisingly good.
Nevertheless, our intention was not to compile merely a showcase of our
favourites, but to make a blend between radio and club-friendly music. So,
this is how we did it this time, hopefully it won`t be the last. Stay
tuned...
