Yugoslav techno mailing list INSOMNIA is an open forum for discussions
on the techno and clubbing culture in this part of the world. The list is
being followed by people from those whose only connection with the scene
is an occasional going to a party to those who are tied to the scene
professionally, so it represents some kind of a bond between the local
techno population, the organizers, musicians, Djs etc.
The list is located on the Data Voyage system (dv.co.yu). There are
currently more than 60 people on Insomnia, including the members of the
fUSiON group and the representatives of Integra, Kozmik, Psychodelia,
Noise Destruction, POF, Tehnokratia and others. Daily we have about 15
kilobytes of text, but we occasionally have relatively big variations of
that number.
For the needs of communication with the people who don't speak
serbian, we established a english version of the list. All messages are,
however, forwarded to the normal list.

History
The idea of creating Insomnia came from the need of expanding the
SezamPro e-mail group fUSiON, that had a maximum number of participants
which was relatively small for our needs, and was limited to only one
system. The first attempts were made in a form of fUSiON digests which
were distributed thoughout many of our systems and gave others some,
minimal, opportunity of contributing to the work of the group.
Soon, the first commercial provider started work in Yugoslavia, and
Renegade's bbs called Pyrotechnika gained a UUCP account. So, without any
experience in working with a listserver, MasterMind and Renegade founded
Insomnia on Pyro.EUnet.Yu in the middle of may 1996. After a few weeks of
the test work, Insomnia is revealed to public in 15.06.1996. Although it
was advertised in the first issue of the new T0XiC (23.05.1996), the test
period finally ended with the definite resolving of all the problems that
disturbed the normal work in the middle of june.
Insomnia then had something less than 20 members, mainly former and
current members of e-mail groups fUSiON and Active, and it's stadium of
warming-up was brutally interrupted by shutting down the UUCP account of
Pyrotechnika. Successful in a way, this attempt of starting the list was a
foundation to all the future attempts, and it showed in a relatively
short period the necessity of having a list of that kind. Soon after the
shut-down, the search for the new system begun, starting with the system
of the University of Organizational Sciences (FON) in Belgrade. We got a
'green light' from the administrators, but never managed to do anything
more that that.
As the negotiations of FON progressed, Sky Story, a member of the fUSiON
group, managed to start a maling list on OpenNet, this time named fUSiON,
on october sixth, 1996. The address was fusion@classroom.opennet.org. A
pitty that that attempt failed, mainly because the SezamPro software which
didn't recognize the 'Reply-To' and 'Errors-to' fields of the message.
This project failed only a few days after starting.
Broker, the administrator of the Data Voyage system contacted MasterMind
with the idea to establish a mailing list for the T0XiC magazine. The idea
of starting Insomnia surfaced once again, and the new list was up on
december 12th, 1996. The members were, in the beginning, old members of
Insomnia, but we were soon joined by new members of fUSiON, as well as
representatives of some DJ organizations. This was the first really
successful attempt of connecting the crowd and the DJs in this land.
After a huge increase in the number of messages as well as the amount of
noise on Insomnia, we have decided to transform the list to digest-only on
march 4th, 1997. The amount of noise fell drastically, and sonetime later
we enabled the normal access also. The hundredth digest was sent on june
the 18th, soon after the first birthday of the list.
The list was upgraded on september the 2nd to contain two more
versions, the english, intended for foreigners, and the moderated version,
intended for those who are interested only in the latest information.
